« Nous sommes la sculpture sociale !
Ceci est la troisième sculpture !
Vous êtes la sculpture pensante ! »

« J’aimerais élargir notre conception de la vie. Vous êtes mon ami, mon ennemi, ma sculpture. Nous sommes ici pour expliquer le concept de « Sculpture Sociale », créé par Joseph Beuys durant les années 1960 ; l’idée est étroitement liée à la conscience et au nationalisme allemands des années d’après-guerre. Comme je suis Américain, mes distorsions de son génie prendront une forme personnelle, exempte d’applications politiques. J’énoncerai un ensemble d’idées qui étendront la notion de sculpture sociale pour y inclure les aspects intimes et personnels de notre vie, les moments embarrassants, sans adopter l’approche transcendantale d’un chaman, et je montrerai en quoi chacun est aujourd’hui un artiste, sans devoir satisfaire au prérequis d’une société transformée, du Parti vert ou du Parti pour le référendum direct… » {1}

Ben Kinmont bénéficie actuellement de deux expositions monographiques à Rennes « We are a multitude » jusqu'au 22 avril à la galerie Art et Essai ainsi qu'« Open by Chance & Appointment » au Cabinet du Livre d'Artiste. Parallèlement au vernissage de l'exposition, un lancement de deux livres récents « Open by Chance & Appointment » et « The Antinomian Press », la bibliographie de sa maison d'édition aura lieu à Air de Paris ainsi qu'une rencontre avec Ben Kinmont programmée le 17 avril à 17h00 à Section 7 Books. {2}

“We are the social sculpture!
This is the third sculpture!
You are the thinking sculpture!”

“I wish to open up our understanding of life. You are a ly friend, ly enemy, my sculpture. We are here to explain the notion of Social Sculpture, an idea given to us by Joseph Beuys during the Sixties, an idea very much related to German Nationalism and consciousness during the post-war years. As I am American my distorsions of his genius shall take expand Social Sculpture to include the personal, to include the intimate sides of our life, the embarrasing moments without the transcendental meaning of a shaman, and show how everyman and everymowan is an artist now, without the prerequisite of a transformed society, of the Green Party or the Party for Direct Referendum…”{1}

Air de Paris is very pleased to present the complete archive of “I am for you” initiated in New York in 1990, then activated the same year in Cologne. It will be reactivated by the distribution of 4 texts in the streets of Paris during the afternoon of the first day of the exhibition, then for the gallery's opening.

In Ben Kinmont's work, relative terminology of archive can be conjugated in present. Through “I am for you”, the artist is testing today — and again — his idea of third sculpture, thinking sculpture and thus invite us to reconsider what “We are a multitude” means!

Ben Kinmont currently has two solo exhibitions in Rennes.“We are a multitude” is on a view until Appril 22nd at Galerie Art et Essai as well as “Open by Chance – Appointment” at Cabinet du Livre d'Artiste. On the occasion of the opening, Air de Paris is also pleased to announce the launch of two recent books “Open by Chance & Appointment” and “The Antinomian Press”, bibliography of his publishing company at the gallery and a talk with Ben Kinmont on April 17th at 5 pm at Section 7 Books. {2}
