Dorothy Iannone
1933, Boston - 2022, Berlin

“One thing led naturally to the next. (…) Before putting my fingers in the paint, I had already been making pen and ink drawings evenings at home with James. Eventually these drawings developed into the highly detailed non-abstract compositions of my later work, which is characterized by a deliberate approach…” The interrelationship between discipline and spontaneity is a leitmotif in the form and content of Iannone’s entire oeuvre. The finely elaborated drawings that she had already begun during literature seminars at Brandeis were followed almost immediately by her large-format flat-surface paintings of the early 1960s, which at first glance remain wholly immured in Abstract Expressionism. ("I Was Thinking of You" Olivier Koerner von Gustorf)
